Singing Warm-Ups for Kids (Ages 2–12)

Children's voices are still developing, so warm-ups should be short, soft and playful. The goal is not volume or range — it is building the habit of breathing well and making sound easily. Five minutes is plenty.

Ages 2–4: sound play

Blow bubbles, buzz like a bee, and copy animal sounds up and down in pitch. These are sirens in disguise, and toddlers do them naturally.

Keep everything at a speaking volume and stop while it is still fun. Two or three minutes is a full session at this age.

Ages 5–8: humming and gliding

Add gentle humming on a comfortable note, then slides from low to high on 'oo' — a rocket taking off and landing works well as a picture.

Introduce simple call-and-response: you sing three notes, they copy. This builds pitch matching, which is the foundation of singing in tune.

  • Keep sessions under 10 minutes
  • Never ask for loud singing
  • Stop if the voice sounds scratchy or the child is tired

Ages 9–12: real warm-ups, gently

At this age children can follow the full adult sequence at a soft volume: breathing, humming, lip trills, sirens and five-note scales on vowels.

The rule stays the same — nothing should ever feel like straining, and range grows on its own as the technique settles.

Questions singers ask

At what age can a child start singing lessons?

Children can start playful sound and pitch-matching activities from around age two or three. Structured warm-ups and simple technique work well from about age five, always at a soft volume.

Are singing warm-ups safe for children?

Yes, when they stay short, soft and playful. Avoid loud belting and long sessions, and stop if a child's voice sounds hoarse or scratchy.
